Ayo Dosunmu Receives NBA’s Bob Lanier Community Assist Award!

Ayo Dosunmu will remember the 2023 offseason fondly. Not only did the Chicago Bulls guard sign a three-year, $21 million deal to stick with his hometown team, but the 23-year-old was also named the NBA Cares Bob Lanier Community Assist Award winner!

The league office announced the prestigious recognition on Thursday afternoon, honoring Dosunmu for his recent work in the Chicago community. Dosunmu’s work included engaging with over 1,500 kids across multiple different projects. The NBA specifically mentions a basketball clinic Dosunmu held with Black Kids Predict, his 2nd annual “Ayo’s Block Party,” and his “Ayo’s Scholars” program, which will award honor roll students at his former grade school with tickets to Bulls games.

“This recognition means the world to me, not just as a basketball player, but as a proud representative of this incredible city,” Dosunmu said in a statement released by the league.  “Being able to give back to the same city that raised me and made me the man I am today is an unforgettable feeling.  I dedicate this award to the youth of Chicago – dream fearlessly and stay focused, and the opportunities will be endless.”

As frustrating as the Chicago Bulls season-opener was on Wednesday night, this serves as a great reminder that we’re talking about more than just a game. Dosunmu has made a significant effort since entering the league to positively advance the community he grew up in. And I’m happy to see the NBA has recognized him for his efforts.

The Chicago Bulls will honor Dosunmu at the team’s Nov. 6 game against the Utah Jazz.

For a little on Ayo Dosunmu’s on-court impact …
