The Washington Wizards announced on Thursday that they will be in the market for a new head coach this offseason. Former leader Wes Unseld Jr. will stay with the franchise and transition to a front-office role.
The decision comes after Useld Jr. served two and a half seasons as head coach, compiling a 77-130 record. Washington is currently in the thick of a rebuild after trading Bradley Beal and Kristaps Porzingis this past summer. They are 7-36 on the year and could be on the brink of trading several more veteran pieces with the Feb. 8 deadline around the corner.
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski has already reported that assistant Brain Keefe will take over for the remainder of the season. As the press release above states, the Wizards will then undergo a “comprehensive” search for their next head coach during the offseason.
Considering where this organization is at, I do find it surprising that they opted to make this change midway through the season. I have to wonder if Wes Unseld Jr. had a hard time buying into coaching the team’s new direction. Regardless, the son of the Washington great Wes Unseld will get to continue his career inside the organization. I’m sure that means a lot to him.
