Anthony Edwards is on the path toward superstardom.
The Minnesota Timberwolves guard is coming off a career season, and he’s only continued his breakout campaign during the team’s first-round series against the Phoenix Suns. Edwards has outplayed the Suns’ star-studded lineup from Game 1, so it came as no surprise that his best game of the series came with a chance to advance.
Edwards helped lift the Timberwolves to a series sweep thanks to 40 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists on 13-23 shooting. He also drained seven shots from long range, tying his season-high.
Edwards’ best moment of the night came with only a couple of minutes left on the clock. As the Suns hoped to keep their season alive down just 113-111, the 22-year-old strapped on his cape and took flight. Edwards raced right past Bradley Beal and left his feet to dunk on the head of a rotating Kevin Durant.

Of course, Edwards has become known for his high-flying dunks. Few players in the league have his combination of explosiveness and size. But the fact he pulled off this kind of highlight play at this moment in the game makes it all the more special. Only the league’s most exceptional talents find a way to go up a level when the spotlight is the brightest.
The Timberwolves ended up winning the game 122-116, likely positioning them to face the reigning champion Denver Nuggets in the second round (lead Lakers 3-1). As for the Suns, there is about to be a lot of finger-pointing going on behind the scenes. The franchise mortgaged its entire future on building this remarkably expensive core, so any year that ends without a single playoff victory has to be deemed a complete disaster.
