After a thorough search that reportedly consisted of several candidates, the Charlotte Hornets have hired their new head coach. This morning, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Boston Celtics assistant Charles Lee has agreed to a four-year deal to be the new bench boss in Charlotte.
Among the reported candidates that Charlotte considered were former NBA player and current broadcaster J.J. Redick and the head coach of Sacramento’s G-Leauge team, Lindsey Harding.
Hornets New Regime Is Complete
The Charles Lee hire is the first major decision from their new President of Basketball Operations Jeff Peterson. Peterson was hired just over two months ago to take charge of the franchise.
Charles Lee has a very solid resume as an NBA assistant coach already. He’s in his first year as an assistant in Boston under Joe Mazzula. Prior to that, Lee worked on Mike Budenholzer’s staff in Milwaukee as an assistant for five seasons and was a part of the 2021 NBA Championship season. He also worked on Budenholzer’s staff dating back to 2014 when he was in Atlanta.
Lee will be allowed to finish out the playoff run with the Celtics before taking over fully with Charlotte. As of this writing, the Celtics hold a 1-0 lead over the Cavaliers in their second-round series and are the favorites to win the NBA Championship.
