At this time last year, shortstop Starlin Castro was considered a solid, but by no means studly, Chicago Cubs prospect. At present, it’s hard not to consider him the top prospect in the Chicago Cubs system.
Starlin Castro hit his first homer and added a triple in the Mesa Solar Sox’s 2-1 loss Tuesday to the Peoria Saguaros in Arizona Fall League play. It’s good timing for Castro to get hot. The Cubs brass is in Arizona for the organizational meetings. Castro is batting .429 so far. Muskat Ramblings.
Arizona is an easier place to hit, particularly this time of year, due to the dry air. Breaking stuff doesn’t quite snap like it does elsewhere. So maybe Castro’s .429 average isn’t so impressive. Except, that’s the top average in the league – so it doesn’t matter whether it’s easy to hit in Arizona or not. Castro’s outhitting everyone else. And boom goes the dynamite.
Not to be outdone (by too much), other top prospect Josh Vitters is hitting .360, and generally playing very well. Someday, they could make up the left side of the Cubs’ infield.
