The Cubs Are Caravaning in 2010

If your kids are looking for a chance to see some of their favorite Chicago Cubs players and coaches in person … you might have to tell them to be a little more realistic. Their favorites are unlikely to participate in this year’s Cubs Caravan – but it should still be cool:

The Caravan will take place Jan. 13-14 and consist of two tours of Cubs players, coaches and front-office staff. They will visit seven cities, six elementary schools, two Boys and Girls Clubs and Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. The full group also will take part in a luncheon Jan. 13 at Harry Caray’s Restaurant in downtown Chicago to benefit Cubs Charities.

For the sixth year, the Cubs are working to promote literacy in area schools via the Cubs Spotlight on Reading Program in conjunction with Comcast Spotlight. The program is designed to increase literacy levels by promoting reading and rewarding students for their achievements in reading.

One tour will begin Jan. 13 and stop at De Duprey/Von Humboldt Schools in Chicago and the Elgin Boys and Girls Club in Elgin, Ill. That group will travel downstate to Springfield on Jan. 14 to appear at the Lincoln Library and Museum as well as the Chiefs’ fan fest.

The second group will begin its tour Jan. 13 at Alexander Hamilton Elementary School in Chicago, and also stop at Uplift Community High School, Crispus Attucks Elementary School and then visit the Northwest Indiana Boys and Girls Club in Gary, Ind.

On the next day, the second group will stop at James Blaine Elementary School and Hawthorne Scholastic Academy in Chicago, then the Waukegan School District in Waukegan, Ill., before finishing with a private event at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center for the USO. cubs.com.

The players and coaches participating will be announced soon, and then are subject to change. Last year, some of the highlighted participants included manager Lou Piniella, G.M. Jim Hendry, announces Len Kaspr and Bob Brenly, and pitchers Carlos Marmol and Jeff Samardzija.

And I believe Joey Gathright jumped over a moose.
