Whoa – a four-run comeback against a good team on the road? Small victories, I guess.
Matt Garza had a mixed second start today. On the one hand, he struck out nearly two Reds per inning … on the other hand, he pitched just four innings and gave up four earned runs. He wasn’t very economical with his pitches, and he was a little bit all over the place. Not the kind of dominant start you’d like to see, but, remember: it was just his second start in 10 months. There’s a process of getting back to where he was, and I’m optimistic he’ll get there.
On the other side of the bump, Johnny Cueto was not mixed in his second start back from a much shorter time away from the field. Thankfully the Reds’ bullpen was ready to give the game up to the Cubs. And the Cubs’ bullpen pulled a Johnny Cueto.
