Travis Wood pitched exactly like you should when you’re at Petco facing the current iteration of the Padres’ lineup: throw strikes, and let them put the ball in play. For nearly eight innings, it yielded a shutout. Wood wound up giving up a two-run homer in the 8th, but it was still a great performance. And then the Ramirez/Rondon tandem did their thing to finish it up.
And that two-run homer wasn’t enough to tie the game because, a couple innings earlier, Wood gave the Cubs their third run on a single that followed an intentional walk to Darwin Barney. Don’t walk a guy to get to Travis Wood, man. Luis Valbuena homered, and Nate Schierholtz had a couple hits, including a double. The bottom of the order got it done last night.
