Cubs Announce More Draft Signings: Dewees, Wilson, Rose, Twomey, More (UPDATE: Sizable Bonus for Wilson)

2015 mlb draftToday the Chicago Cubs made official more of their signings from the 2015 MLB Draft, some previously known, some not. You can see the previously announced official signings here.

Among the official announcements was second rounder Donnie Dewees, whose over slot signing we discussed yesterday. The other newly announced signings:

4th Round: OF D.J. Wilson, Ohio (HS)

9th Round: LHP Tyler Peitzmeier, Cal St.-Fullerton

11th Round: 3B Matt Rose, Georgia State

13th Round: LHP Kyle Twomey, USC

16th Round: CF Michael Foster, Northeastern U.

17th Round: RHP Casey Bloomquist, Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo

19th Round: RHP Kyle Miller, Florida Atlantic

22nd Round: OF Alex Bautista, Lindsey Williams College

24th Round: SS Sutton Whiting, Louisville

29th Round: C Ian Rice, Houston

30th Round: C Tyler Payne, West Virginia State

31st Round: OF Daniel Spingola, Georgia Tech

33rd Round: RHP M.T. Minacci, Not Denoted

37th Round: OF Donnie Cimio, Wesleyan

You can read about the players at the live blog from the second and third days of the draft.

Wilson, who was a Vanderbilt commit (translation: quality high school prospect), likely required well over his $503,100 slot value to sign. The Cubs have saved some on Ian Happ and their 6th through 10th round seniors, and we learned yesterday that Dewees required about $400,000 over slot to sign. Once Wilson’s bonus is known, as well as whether any of the later round signings required more than $100,000 (at which point it counts against the pool), I’ll update you on where things stand. My rough math has the Cubs with enough to sign third rounder Bryan Hudson and spend an extra hundred thousand or two in the later rounds – which may or may not be enough to do much damage – depending on how much Wilson gets.

UPDATE: Wilson’s getting quite a bit:

Clearly, Cubs were big fans. That is top of the 2nd round money, and will eat up just about all that the Cubs have to play with when you factor in what Dewees got and what Hudson is going to require.

But don’t be disappointed: as we discussed during the draft, it seemed pretty clear that the Cubs were simply very happy about who fell to them in the first four rounds and made signing Dewees, Hudson, and Wilson their priority.

It’s a good bet that Hudson is getting the majority of whatever the Cubs have left to use – they can offer him seven figures.
