Addison Russell Day to Day with Hamstring Tightness (VIDEO)

Chicago Cubs

After legging out a triple last night in the fourth inning, youngster Addison Russell left the game with left hamstring tightness. Here’s the play:

He’s getting further testing done today, and Joe Maddon couldn’t speak specifically last night on the severity of the injury ( For his part, Russell indicated that he felt better after getting some rest and ice treatment, and maybe even felt like he could have stayed in the game. It sounds like he just didn’t want to put the Cubs in a bad spot if he was out there in an important position and wasn’t at his best.

We’ll see if Russell is available for today’s game, and/or if he starts (and/or if he’s out for longer). The Cubs are very fortunate to have at least two other capable shortstops (Starlin Castro and Javier Baez) who could step in if needed, though it’s hard to see anyone replacing Russell’s glove right now, and any injury chips away at the depth.

Here are some of Russell’s post-game comments:

If you have a good memory and you’re wondering: yes, Russell did miss significant time back in 2014 with a torn hamstring, but that was his right hamstring. The current injury is tightness in his left hamstring.
