It seems the Cubs and Cardinals have had the same offseason planned from the outset. I’m only half joking. David Price, Jason Heyward, John Lackey, and Ben Zobrist were all rumored to be involved with both teams at one time or another, and, while the Cubs managed to snag the latter three, there are no victory dances to be had just yet.
We know the Cardinals are going to do something to improve their club after losing some pieces from last year’s 100-win squad, and after losing Lance Lynn to Tommy John surgery. Other rotation considerations include Carlos Martinez’s shoulder (which ended his 2015 season early), Michael Wacha’s struggles in the second half last year, and Alex Reyes’s suspension to begin the season.
[adinserter block=”1″]The most logical spot for the Cardinals to improve this offseason, then, is their rotation, both in depth and impact. To that end, Jon Morosi reports that they have had talks with the Rays about picking up a starting pitcher – yet another of the Cubs’ many possible angles this offseason. The only name Morosi mentions is Jake Odorizzi, who has most recently been connected to the Dodgers in trade talks, and who previously came up in Cubs rumors.
We’ll see if this goes anywhere, but, as I’ve said many times before, you have to brace yourself for some Cardinals activity this offseason. They’ll do something impactful, something smart. And you’ll hate it.
