[adinserter block=”1″]Joe Maddon decided to start Matt Szczur in left field tonight over Kyle Schwarber, presumably because of the right-handed bat and defense in left. He even joked with Carrie Muskat – or maybe he was serious – that the reason was because Villanova, where Szczur went to school, won the national championship last night.
Whatever the reason, Maddon was right. Because Matt Szczur did this to open up the floodgates in the third inning against Andrew Heaney tonight:

Definitely a mistake pitch, but Szczur’s still gotta do his part and put good wood on it. And boy did it. That’s a nice, quick swing, and Szczur sent out a no-doubter.
The future remains fairly murky for Szczur, who is out of minor league options, after Javier Baez is ready to return, but all he can do right now is take advantage of the opportunities he gets. So far, so good, with a double last night and a homer tonight.
