Brian Matusz Coming, Justin Grimm Optioned to AAA Iowa

Chicago Cubs

justin grimm cubs moundThe full discussion is here from earlier today, so I won’t rehash too much. Short version? Lefty Brian Matusz is coming up tomorrow to start the series finale against the Mariners. It’ll be really interesting to see how he looks now that the Cubs have, in theory, re-worked him a bit.

The Cubs have now confirmed Matusz is coming (via Carrie Muskat), and it’s Justin Grimm who’ll be optioned to AAA Iowa to make room on the roster. Grimm’s been fantastic lately, but with he, Carl Edwards Jr., and Aroldis Chapman the only relievers on the roster with minor league options remaining, it’s not like the Cubs had an easy choice here. Not unlike when they sent Tommy La Stella to Iowa to make room for Chris Coghlan, this is just a matter of trying to protect all of the team’s assets, while also fielding the best possible roster. When you’ve got more than 25 big league talents in the organization, sometimes these tricky moves have to happen.

Absent an injury to another player, Grimm cannot return to the big league roster for 10 days.
