Enhanced Box Score: Cubs 5, Marlins 4 – August 3, 2016
WOW.
For the second time in four days, the Cubs not only came back to win a game that they trailed by more than one run in the 9th inning, but they also scored the tying AND winning runs in crazy fashion.
No, today’s win over the Marlins probably doesn’t get up there with Sunday’s win – that was another planet of crazy – but this was pretty darn nuts.
John Lackey pitched pretty well today, and even supported his own cause with two doubles … both of which were squandered. Indeed, for five innings it was looking like the Cubs were going to be shut down by Tom Koehler and the Marlins’ killer bullpen. And then scored the tying run in the 6th on a two-out Willson Contreras hit!
… but then a two-run homer by Jeff Mathis gave the Marlins a lead, which grew to 4-1 by the 8th inning.
… but then the Cubs got a free run back in the 8th thanks to old friend Fernando Rodney!
… but then the Cubs squandered a great scoring opportunity the rest of that inning.
… but then the Cubs loaded the bases in the 9th and cut it to a one-run deficit on a Dexter Fowler sac fly, with the tying run at third and the winning run at second!
… but then Kris Bryant was called out on a really, really bad strike three off the plate.
… but then Marlins closer A.J. Ramos intentionally walked Anthony Rizzo to load the bases, unintentionally walked Ben Zobrist to tie the game, and uncorked a wild pitch to give the Cubs the walk-off!
HOLY. CRAP.
And that’s a sweep! A crazy sweep!
