The Chicago Cubs and the Myrtle Beach Pelicans have announced an extension on their Player Development Contract through 2020. The Pelicans joined the Cubs organization for the 2015 season, and from all accounts the Cubs have been pretty happy with the facilities in Myrtle Beach. This extension was really not a surprise.
I am fairly confident that this effectively locks up all five of the Cubs contracted affiliates through at least 2018. Iowa is more or less a permanent fixture now, and I think Tennessee is nearly to that same status. The Cubs appear to be very pleased with South Bend, and I don’t see that relationship ending any time soon (they also have recently signed a long extension). That leaves Eugene and Myrtle Beach, two teams with good training facilities. I believe Eugene is locked up through 2018, and Myrtle Beach is now extended through 2020. Â The Cubs farm system looks stable, likely for quite some time.
On the whole, this is very good news for the Cubs. Good minor league organizations with good facilities and strong fan bases can be a hot commodity. Other teams are going to want those same benefits, and the negotiations on player development deals can be murky. For at least the next two years, though, that is something we don’t have to worry about.[adinserter block=”1″][adinserter block=”10″]
When the calendar rolls over to September, we are likely to see two waves of callups. The first will come right away, on September 1, and will include players on the 40 man that the Cubs want back in Wrigley as soon as possible. That list should include Coghlan and La Stella, among others. The second will come about a week later, after the completion of Iowa’s season. This group will include anyone the Cubs would rather keep playing every day for the final week before bringing them to Wrigley for some extra seasoning and to rest their regulars. That is when I expect to see Candelario, Almora, maybe Pierce Johnson, and so forth. That crew could go in the first wave, but if they don’t it probably just means the Cubs are waiting for the end of Iowa’s season.

Eloy Jimenez is not on the DL, but has not played since being pulled after his first inning ground out on August 27.
There will be at least one playoff game in the Arizona Rookie League today, but as of last night the league had not made any official announcement (on their website, anyway) regarding who, when, or where. So the Cubs might take the field today. If not today, then probably tomorrow.
The Tennessee Smokies had a down year on the field, but not in the stands. They set a new single season attendance record last night, breaking their 2014 mark of 283,038.
More news from Tennessee: outfielder Lane Adams, only recently signed to the organization as a minor league free agent, has been named the Southern League Player of the Week. His .500/.548/.750 line, 3 doubles, and 7 steals were enough to secure him the honors just in time for his promotion to Iowa.
When Eugene finished their 50th win last night, just minutes after the Cubs wrapped up a marathon two time zones to the east, they set a new franchise record for wins in a season.
