There’s no reason to shy away from it: The Chicago Cubs have clinched the NL Central for the first time since 2008!
Although they had already guaranteed themselves a seat at the table come October (via the Wild Card), the Chicago Cubs have officially clinched the NL Central. Indeed, the Giants 6-2 win over the Cardinals late in the evening early this morning reduced the magic number down to zero and handed the division to the Cubs!
It was a long time coming – they’ve spent all but one day (April 8) in first place – but clinching the division is more than a symbolic victory. The Cubs will now avoid the treacherous and certainly disadvantageous one-game Wild Card Playoff and will instead advance directly to the NLDS. Should their record hold up as best in the National League, they will get the benefit of playing the winner of the Wild Card game in a five-game set, three of which would be at Wrigley Field.

The only downside to of any of this was that the Cubs weren’t able to celebrate on-the-field in-front of the fans, immediately after last nights game, but that’s a small price to pay for divisional assurance this far in advance (dumb Cardinals – they can’t even win when we want them to).
But that’s enough of the technical talk. Let’s party!
Enjoy it, friends. We’ve all earned it.
