Spring Training Miscellany: Javy’s New Hair, Mashers Take BP, Maddon Slogans, Much More

Chicago Cubs

Day Two of Spring Training (and Valentine’s Day!) is upon us, and with that we have more miscellaneous photos and stories to share.

As you know, pitchers and catchers reported today, but the first full-squad workout isn’t until this weekend, after the rest of the squad officially reports on Friday.

But Joe Maddon is already working on ways to motivate his team and avoid complacency.

  • Like last year, he’s going to first come up with a slogan/T-shirt one-liner to be the theme for the Cubs. Here are some of the early options, according to Carrie Muskat:

  • Maddon has teased “authenticity” before, but I think “Be Uncomfortable” is much more Joe than any other options I’ve seen. The heartbeat is a reference to the heightened state of Game Seven of the World Series, by the way.
  • And keeping with tradition, Maddon will also be distracting his players from the grind and pressure of the upcoming season with fun, random events:

  • Maddon jokingly added that although mimes would not be returning for a second Spring Training appearance (per MLB’s strict mime rules), magicians were exempt from such restrictions. Oh, Joe. Never change.
  • Getting after it:

  • About Javy Baez’s hair:

  • David Ross has his new uniform ready to go:

  • Rizzo let it grow, but it won’t last:

Back to the grind. #SpringTraining

  • Also, Cubs outfield prospect Jacob Hannemann, thought of as a speed burner, looks downright ripped:

  • And fellow outfielder Matt Szczur still looks like a beast:
