But instead I’ll highlight the work done by the Double A pitching staff in Tennessee. Zach Hedges is certainly the biggest factor, pitching a one-hitter to open a doubleheader on the road, but don’t overlook the work done in Game Two. The Smokies basically made the second game a bullpen game, and three relievers combined to toss another shutout. That’s fourteen straight scoreless innings on the road, and that’s pretty impressive.

There were four three run innings in this game, but Round Rock had three of them.
I’m really starting to think Zach Hedges does not get enough respect. He doesn’t strike out very many, but last year he posted sub-3.00 ERAs in both High A and Double A, and then this season he now has a one hitter to his name. In that one hitter he only needed 94 pitches go all seven innings (doubleheader games are shorter in the minors), and he amassed 14 ground ball outs to just three in the air.
Counting his twin three-run bombs last night, South Bend’s Zack Short is up to four homers on the season. The 21-year-old shortstop was the Cubs’ 17th round pick last year, and is hitting .270/.382/.540 so far in his first full professional season. Here’s one of those blasts:
