If you don’t remember the name Casey Kelly, Iowa’s starter last night, that would not be surprising. The Cubs signed him in January, but he stayed on the DL until last night.
Once he was considered one of the better pitching prospects in baseball, so good in fact that he headlined the original Anthony Rizzo trade that sent Adrian Gonzalez from San Diego to Boston while Kelly (and Rizzo) went the opposite way. He was a first round pick all the way back in 2008, and a highly touted quarterback before that.
In 2013 he had arm surgery, and ever since has been on and off the DL while bouncing around the farm systems of San Diego and Atlanta. The Cubs picked him up in the offseason on a minor league deal, and have been working with him at extended Spring Training since then. Still just 27, there remains potential for Kelly, whom the Cubs discussed in the offseason in the same group of potential big league starter depth with Brett Anderson, Eddie Butler, and Alec Mills.
