The Cubs’ bats – and discipline – came alive early in this one, with Javy Baez dealing the big blow after a series of walks. It was nice to be on the side of the team up 5-0 after one inning.
The Cubs added on from there, including a monster shot to center from Kris Bryant, and it was good that they did, since the Reds did try to mount a comeback late by stringing together some hits and getting some unnerving gifts in the 9th. Thankfully Koji Uehara came in to shut things down.
Jon Lester was much better than his line looks, since two of the earned runs charged to him came in after he’d departed, and reached base on ground balls that weren’t especially well struck.
Offensively, Baez had two other hits and a walk in the game, and Ian Happ reached base three more times.
And it’s a sweep!
