Cubs Minor League Daily: Whole Lotta Offense, 10 Ks for De La Cruz

Three Cubs affiliates combined to score 30 runs last night, and the Iowa Cubs scored a couple of runs as well.

The biggest night of them all, though, goes to Myrtle Beach. The Pelicans did not score at all from the second through the ninth inning, and it didn’t matter. Their offense piled on eleven runs in the first, and five of those eleven were driven in by the best prospect in the system: Eloy Jimenez.

In addition to a grand slam (his third homer of the season, which we enjoyed here earlier today), Jimenez came back to the plate in the first and added an RBI single. In one inning of play he put up five total bases and drove in five. That’s a good day.

There were a lot of good days yesterday.

Triple A: Iowa Cubs
Reno 5, Iowa 2
With ten hits, the Cubs had plenty of chances in this one.

  • Steve Perakslis: 3.2 IP, 4 R, 4 H, 2 BB, 5 K
  • David Berg: 2.1 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 1 K
  • Jack Leathersich: 1 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 K
  • Zach Rosscup: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 K
  • John Andreoli: 1 for 5, 3B
  • Tommy La Stella: 1 for 5, 2B
  • Mark Zagunis: 1 for 1, 2B, BB
  • Chris Dominguez: 1 for 2, HR
  • Stephen Bruno: 2 for 3
  • Ali Solis: 2 for 4
  • Double A: Tennessee Smokies
    Tennessee 10, Biloxi 4
Don’t overlook the starting pitching for the Smokies in this one.

  • Jen-Ho Tseng: 6 IP, 1 R, 7 H, 1 BB, 6 K
  • Jeffrey Baez: 2 for 5, 2B, HR
  • Andrew Ely: 3 for 3, 2B, 2 BB
  • David Bote: 2 for 4
  • Jason Vosler: 2 for 3, 2B
  • Jen-Ho Tseng: 1 for 2, 2B
  • Yasiel Balaguert: 1 for 1, 2B
  • Jacob Hannemann: 0 for 3, BB, SB
  • High A: Myrtle Beach Pelicans
    Myrtle Beach 11, Winston-Salem 4
The starting pitching was pretty good in this one as well.

  • Oscar De La Cruz: 5.2 IP, 3 R, 5 H, 2 BB, 10 K
  • Michael Rucker: 3.1 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 5 K
  • Trent Giambrone: 1 for 3, 2B, 2 BB
  • Eloy Jimenez: 2 for 5, HR
  • Eddy Martinez: 3 for 5
  • Low A: South Bend Cubs
South Bend 9, Bowling Green 5
The Cubs are now ten games over .500.

  • Jose Paulino: 4.2 IP, 3 R, 2 H, 6 BB, 1 K
  • Chad Hockin: 2 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 1 K
  • Wladimir Galindo: 2 for 3, 2 2B
  • Isaac Paredes: 2 for 4, 2B
  • Kevonte Mitchell: 1 for 4, HR
  • Michael Cruz: 1 for 2, 2 BB
  • Luis Ayala: 1 for 4, 2B
  • Other Notes

  • So what does an eleven run first inning look like? Double, walk, HBP, homer, single, walk, single, walk, single, error, single, ground out, single, single, ground out, strikeout. That’s right, there was just one extra base hit in that entire sequence, and the first 11 batters reached base.
  • Obviously, it was a record:
  • Victor Caratini left yesterday’s I-Cubs game after slipping in the infield. Hopefully it’s not a serious injury, because he’s been raking.
  • With yesterday’s start in the books, Tseng has an ERA of 2.60. His numbers so far this season are comparable to the numbers he put up during his extremely good 2014 campaign. The difference, of course, is that this year he is doing it in Double A. If he keeps this up, we will be certainly be taking a closer look at Tseng a time or two before the season is out.
  • Oscar De La Cruz set a new season high with his ten strikeouts.
  • Two things I really like in the Myrtle Beach highlights of their win: Jimenez going the other way on his single in the first, and the movement on some of De La Cruz’s out pitches. Well worth a watch.
