Later this season, Major League Baseball will be hosting a weekend long event known as “Players Weekend.”
And during this three-day event (from August 25th to the 27th), players will be allowed to, well, basically, have some fun with their wardrobe. More specifically, they’ll be able to wear nicknames on the back of their jerseys, wear fluorescent-colored spikes, batting gloves, wristbands, catcher’s masks and more!
OH YEEEAH.
According to a memo obtained by Yahoo Sports, Players Weekend was negotiated between the league and Players Association, after players expressed interest in showing off their unique style on the field. To be sure, there are some restrictions (nicknames must be appropriate and limited to just one for the weekend, no white is allowed (so that there’s no interference with the ball), and certain crazy bats must be pre-approved), but overall it seems like this may be something of an “anything goes!” concept.
Of course, after the weekend, the special jerseys will be sold by MLB (boo) … but the proceeds will be donated to the Youth Development Foundation (yay!). So, in more ways than one, this can help attract and develop a younger generation to the game. And according to the Yahoo report, MLB may even make this a reoccurring or more frequent event, depending on how it goes and how well it’s received.
Baseball is a sport of a tradition, but traditions have been created every year since the dawn of time – perhaps, this will be a new one.
I, for one, can’t wait to see what the Cubs come up with. Will both Anthony and Kris wear “Bryzzo” on the back of their jerseys? What in the world will Carl Edwards Jr. use? Did John Lackey seriously just go with “Lackey” on the back of his?
Gah. I can’t wait. It’s gonna be fun.
