Chicago Cubs

As Cubs came to the plate in the top of the 11th last night, I made a decision: I had to go to bed.

With the Blogathon looming, I was already staring down the prospect of only six hours sleep before the 40-hour Blogathon began, and if I waited through the 11th, that sleep number would shrink further, AND the game might not even end. So I made the call.

I reached for the remote as Addison Russell whiffed, and got ready to turn the TV off. That’s when Jason Heyward ripped a shot to right center, over the wall, and gave me happy pause. Great timing, sir.

I decided I should still go to bed, but I did so with a smile on my face.

That Heyward shot proved to be the difference in the second straight 2-1 game between these teams, with Kris Bryant tying the game in the 7th inning with a two-out single. The Cubs struck out 17 times in the game, but, hey, when you win, no one needs to notice.

I thought Kyle Hendricks looked better this time out than his first start in a return from the disabled list, though we’ll have to dig in a little deeper on that later today. In the meantime, the Cubs pulled out the win, thanks in no small part to a pristine bullpen performance …
