The Cubs hung on for a wild win yesterday, which alone would drop their magic number to 24.
But, huzzah! The Nationals finally managed to beat the Brewers (barely, 3-2), which pushes the Brewers 4.5 games back of the Cubs, and further drops the Cubs’ magic number to just 23.
The Cardinals also lost, having blown a 9th inning lead, and then got walked off on in the 10th. The Cardinals are now 7.0 games back of the Cubs, and you can just about call them toast in the NL Central.
Elsewhere, the Diamondbacks beat the Rockies, meaning the Cubs now have a 3.0 game lead on the Rockies for the second Wild Card spot (if that were necessary). The Brewers remain 1.5 games behind the Rockies, and the Cardinals remain 4.0 games back.
