Cubs Intend to Clinch in St. Louis, Which is Particularly Delicious, and Other Bullets

If you’ll indulge me a moment for our sister site, The Ten-Yard Line, here up front on a Monday morning: the Bears won! And it was a thrilling win over a good team on a walk-off 19-yard touchdown run in overtime!

I might not be the Bears fan that I am a Cubs fan (with all due love to the Bears, that’s never going to happen), but I was pretty into yesterday’s game. And I can’t help but worry that the team is squandering what could be a modestly competitive season by delaying the emergence of Mitch Trubisky. Mike Glennon has looked so very bad, particularly without an ability to create for himself, given the lack of wide receiver talent. Sure, it’s possible that starting Trubisky would be throwing him to the wolves, but it’s also possible that he would flourish behind a very good line, a good running game, and a solid defense that might not routinely put him in a hole.

Back to your regularly scheduled baseball …

  • Clinching a postseason spot on a walk-off home run at Wrigley Field would be, admittedly, the ideal. But the schedule is such that, right now, it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen for the Cubs – they just got too dang hot recently. So, instead, it’s look very much like the Cubs will clinch the NL Central on Tuesday or Wednesday in St. Louis (remember: they cannot clinch tonight because the Brewers aren’t playing). Celebrating in St. Louis, hopefully after a win over the Cardinals, will still be pretty darn sweet.
  • As Ben Zobrist put it (CSN): “We intend to clinch there. And I think for a lot of the guys that have been around here for a long time, it’s going to be very satisfying.” Very diplomatic, Ben. I read that, instead, as IN YOUR FACE CARDINALS YEAH BABY.

  • Now at 87 wins, the Cubs look a very good bet to hit the 90 win mark in three consecutive seasons for the first time since 1930. It’ll take a few more years to match the all-time club mark, though: the Cubs won at least 90 games every single season from 1904 to 1912.
  • Michael will have more on Jose Quintana today, but I wanted to point out how, after six innings, I was wondering if the Cubs would send him back out there for the 7th after 91 pitches and a healthy lead. Not only did Quintana head back out, he needed only 25 more pitches to complete the final three innings and secure the shutout. Dude.
  • And it’s been a rarity for the Cubs:
  • If you remember the Rich Hill of that era, who would have thought the Cubs would go on to face him in the NLCS 10 years later?
  • Jaaaaaaavy:
  • Jon Jay with a beautiful catch yesterday:
  • That was 107 mph off the bat, and had an 80% hit probability! Seriously, incredible catch.
  • Want to see the Cubs and Cardinals, if you’re in the St. Louis area? Get-in-the-door is super cheap today:
  • That’s it. Cubs, save all of the monies and sign Bryce Harper after 2018:
