Well, the Cubs might not’ve played a game yesterday, but they’re making up for it with two split-squad contests today.
The first is an afternoon matchup against the San Diego Padres at Peoria Stadium. Mike Montgomery will get the start in that one and get a handful of regulars behind him.
Chicago Cubs Lineup at Padres:
- Albert Almora, CF
- Kris Bryant, 3B
- Anthony Rizzo, 1B
- Willson Contreras, C
- Mike Freeman, SS
- Chris Gimenez, DH
- Peter Bourjos, RH
- David Bote, 2B
- Ryan Court, LF
Pitcher: Mike Montgomery
Behind Mike Montgomery, you can expect to see some combination of Rob Zastryzny, Dario Alvarez, and Jen-Ho Tseng.
As for the lineup, Willson Contreras’ return is notable, as he’s been under the weather for several days. With Kris Bryant and Yu Darvish sitting out for similar reasons earlier in the Spring, clearly something is going around down there in Arizona. Wash your hands, boys.

For tonight’s home game against the Giants, the Cubs are starting Tyler Chatwood and giving him the other half of the regulars.
Chicago Cubs Lineup v. Giants:
- Ian Happ, CF
- Jason Heyward, RF
- Ben Zobrist, 2B
- Kyle Schwarber, LF
- Addison Russell, SS
- Tommy La Stella, 3B
- Victor Caratini, C
- Efren Navarro, 1B
- Mark Zagunis, DH
Pitcher: Tyler Chatwood
Behind Chatwood in the pen, you’ll find Brian Duensing, Brandon Morrow, Carl Edwards, and Justin Hancock.
Ian Happ is leading off again in this one, but that’s no longer news, right? He’s basically the front-runner for the job (at least, when he’s in there) at this point, so to get the nod on a split-squad day is more or less expected.
Here’s the Giants lineup for Game #2 (as soon as it’s released, I’ll post it below):
