Cubs Minor League Daily: South Bend Wins A Wild One After Trailing 8-0

Four South Bend Cubs homered and the two teams combined for twenty four runs on twenty five hits, but in the end it was South Bend that walked away winners over Bowling Green in a game they trailed 8-0 early.

One of those homers was hit by second baseman Jared Young, a 15th round pick last summer out of Old Dominion who, as of now, has a line of .533/.611/1.067 with three doubles, a triple, a homer, three walks, and four strikeouts. I have to think he is the early favorite for organizational Player of the Month for April.

Highlights from that comeback win:

Triple A: Iowa Cubs
Nashville 7, Iowa 0
The Cubs had seven hits, but couldn’t string many together.

  • Alec Mills: 4.1 IP, 4 R, 4 H, 3 BB, 6 K
  • Duane Underwood: 3 IP, 3 R (2 ER), 4 H, 3 K
  • Bijan Rademacher: 2 for 3, 2B, BB
  • Mike Freeman: 2 for 3
  • Double A: Tennessee Smokies

    Tennessee had the day off.

    High A: Myrtle Beach Pelicans
    Winston-Salem 6, Myrtle Beach 4
The Pelicans trailed from the first inning.

  • Matt Swarmer: 4.2 IP, 3 R (2 ER), 8 H, 6 K
  • Connor Myers: 1 for 2, 2 BB, SB
  • Daniel Spingola: 1 for 4, HR
  • Andruw Monasterio: 2 for 4
  • Low A: South Bend Cubs
South Bend 13, Bowling Green 11
All that scoring and still the game only took three hours to play.

  • Brendon Little: 0.2 IP, 4 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 1 K
  • Elvis Diaz: 2.1 IP, 1 H, 1 K
  • Brian Glowicki: 3 IP, 1 BB, 4 K
  • Zach Davis: 0 for 4, BB, SB
  • Jared Young: 2 for 5, 2B, HR
  • Austin Filiere: 3 for 5, 2B, HR
  • Michael Cruz: 2 for 4, HR, BB
  • Miguel Amaya: 1 for 2, 2B, 3 BB
  • Brandon Hughes: 1 for 4, 2B, BB
  • Chris Carrier: 1 for 4, HR
  • Other Notes

  • If you want the rooftop viewing experience without the Wrigleyville traffic, starting this summer you can head to South Bend to take advantage of a new left field seating area modeled on the famous Wrigleyville rooftops.
  • Duane Underwood pitched well early in his relief stint for Iowa, but ran into some trouble in his final inning. Depite that final frame, the results were encouraging. Underwood has struggled at times a starter, but the hope is that working out of the bullpen his stuff will play up a bit and he’ll emerge as a quality major league reliever.
  • When Elvis Diaz entered the game with one out to go in the fourth, Bowling Green had scored 11 times. From that point on he and Brian Glowicki combined to hold the Hot Rods to a single hit.
  • Brendon Little almost finished that first inning without allowing a run, but a would-be third out strikeout got by the catcher, the batter reached base, and things went sideways from there.
  • So far this season it seems that when I highlight that a particular pitching prospect is starting a game in the Daily, that start generally doesn’t go well. So this time I am pointing out nothing. Absolutely no one is starting for South Bend tonight. He isn’t one of the best pitching prospects in the system, and he isn’t a guy that I am very high on. In fact, the mound will be totally empty, so I don’t even know who this mystery guy is that I am totally not talking about. And you definitely should not watch on MiLB.tv at 7:05 PM ET. Really. I mean that.
