“How the **** does this help the Reds?“
In a move that is at once wholly unsurprising and also wholly shrugworthy, the Cincinnati Reds today – just a few weeks into the season – have fired manager Bryan Price and pitching coach Mack Jenkins. Price has been the manager since 2014, and has overseen some terrible Reds teams as the front office failed to really settle on a precise path for future competitiveness.
That is to say, it’s not surprising to see the manager of a bad team get canned, but it’s surprising to see it this early in the season when no one is the least bit surprised by where the Reds are right now. This is the team they’ve had for years now, and Price was apparently an adequate steward for those years. But not anymore. Shrug.
Bench coach (and former Cubs manager) Jim Riggleman will take over as the interim manager. The Reds have started the season 3-15, worst in baseball, and there is no sunshine on the immediate horizon. Maybe Price simply lost the clubhouse or something, as the record was so very bad.
I’m still mostly shrugging.
