Later today, the Cubs and Cardinals will salvage what’s left of this rained-out/snowed-out series with a makeup at Wrigley Field.
Indeed, only one of the three games will actually be played on the date it was originally scheduled, but thankfully the weather for today’s originally scheduled off-day isn’t too bad (if you’re cool with 40 degrees this close to May, but I digress).
Jon Lester is starting for the Cubs in this one, and so far this season, he’s alternated good and bad starts:
Start #1: 3.1 IP, 7H, 3ER, 3BB, 2Ks (28 Game Score)
Start #2: 6.0 IP, 3H, 0ER, 1BB, 6Ks (72 GS)
Start #3: 5.0 IP, 7H, 4 ER, 3BB, 3Ks (33 GS)
Sure, he lasted a bit longer in his third start, but he allowed a combined 10 walks/hits in just 5.0 innings and that’s never going to work, especially when you strike out just three batters.
(On a hunch, I decided to check Lester’s lefty/righty splits, and although he’s had just 13 plate appearances against left-handed batters this season, they’ve absolutely crushed him: .364/.462/.545. Again, this is tiniest of tiny samples, so I won’t take it too seriously, but I will keep an eye on his lefty on lefty at-bats today, just to see if anything noticeable jumps out).
Starting opposite Lester is Cardinals’ righty Luke Weaver. As we explored earlier in the lineup post, Weaver has actually been a touch tougher on lefties (.311 wOBA) than righties (.320 wOBA) for his career, which is probably why Albert Almora is getting his chance to lead off (get him opportunities against righties, when the matchup is favorable).
But just because Weaver has favorable splits for Almora (and Javy Baez, batting second), doesn’t mean he’ll be a particularly easy matchup for either guy. In fact, he’s been pretty dominant through his first three starts this year:
Start #1: 5.0 IP, 5H, 1ER, 3BB, 3Ks (59 Game Score)
Start #2: 6.1 IP, 3H, 1ER, 1BB, 7Ks (72 GS)
Start #3: 6.0 IP, 4H, 2 ER, 1BB, 7Ks (52 GS)
Hopefully, the Cubs can save this weird week of missed games with a win against the Cardinals and a return to .500. Let’s go.
