The Cubs have a chance to save this four-game series today, but they’ll need another good performance from Tyler Chatwood, who, despite trying his hardest to screw things up for himself with another six walks, managed to allow just one earned run over 5.1 IP his last time out.
Indeed, if you recall, he struck out two Cardinals and gave up just one hit (a solo homer) in his last start, which, I mean, maybe that’s the best we can expect from him at this point – working around the walks, as opposed to dealing with them.
Opposing Chatwood today is former Cubs’ farmhand Zack Godley. The D-Backs got Godley from the Cubs in the Miguel Montero trade and after a couple years in their organization, broke out with a huge 3.5 WAR season in 2017 (3.37 ERA, 3.41 FIP). He’s not been nearly as good this season (4.65 ERA, 4.22 FIP) as his strikeout rate has dropped to a more league-average figure and his walk rate has ballooned up over 11%. He allows plenty of hard contact, but I think patience might be the best strategy today.
A win today would bring the Cubs up to 60 wins, which would make them the first team in the NL to reach that post. Let’s see it.
