These posts are a lot more fun to do in the morning when good stuff has happened. This is the other kind.
The Cubs lost again to the Brewers, bringing them to within 3.0 games of the Cubs in the NL Central (still four in the loss column, though, so eat it). The Cardinals also won, beating the Nationals, and bringing them to within 4.5 games of the Cubs (five in the loss column).
For the Cubs, the order of the day is just don’t get swept. If the Cubs can win today, then the Brewers made up only a single game over a three-game series in their place. That ain’t too shabby. But if the Cubs do get swept, that’s three games made up in just three days – pretty much the only way you can lose a five-game division lead in September.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals finish up with the Nationals today, and then the Cubs will head out to Washington to tag them out. So if the Cardinals could take them to 15 innings today, that’d be just fine.
The Brewers and Cardinals still lead the Wild Card race by the same margins as yesterday, since everybody won: 1.0 game over the Dodgers, 2.0 games over the Diamondbacks, and 3.5 games over the Phillies.
