The Cubs did what they had to do today – all they could do, since they do not control the Tigers – and beat the Cardinals with relative (and yet continuously tense) ease. The win forces a Game 163 between the Cubs and Brewers to determine the NL Central winner.
The Cubs basically went with a bullpen day today, and it was kinda ugly, as every single pitcher who entered got into some kind of trouble along the way. The best reliever was probably Alec Mills, and he was charged with a couple runs after Carl Edwards came in and allowed them to score.
Offensively, the Cubs hit the ball plenty today, driving it all over the field, taking advantage of Cardinals mistakes, and going a very healthy 6 for 11 with runners in scoring position.
On any other day, you’d regard this as a very solid win over the Cardinals. Today? It extended the Cubs’ season.
