As the Cubs depart Philadelphia today, they’ll say farewell to former teammate Jake Arrieta, who himself is about to say farewell to the 2019 season.

It’s the right move for a guy who just can’t throw all his pitches right now and can’t go beyond three or four innings because he loses the feel after a while. By having the surgery now, he can have a near normal offseason and then be ready to go next year.
It doesn’t directly impact the Cubs anymore, obviously, but I still wish Arrieta well. He’ll likely be a free agent again after next season, so it’ll behoove him to show next year, at age 34, that he’s healthy and can be effective in this phase of his career. Best of luck to him.
