Amid many other considerably more important roster considerations, I won’t put much wait on the finalization of Eric Sogard’s designation for assignment. He was already off the roster either way, and it was really just a question of whether some club would seek to add him for salary relief before he cleared waivers, or whether he would hit free agency.
It’s the latter – the Cubs have released Sogard, who is now free to sign wherever he pleases. Without August trade waivers anymore, I expect some team will quickly sign him to a minor league deal, at least, so as to have him available in August and September in case of emergency.
That was simply a signing that just didn’t work out for the Cubs. On to the next.
