All the afternoon deadlines are flying by, including Qualifying Offers and minor league free agency. Another is the deadline to reinstate players from the 60-day IL, which fully sets your 40-man roster to kick off the meaty part of the offseason.
For the Cubs, that meant today reinstating all of the following guys onto the 40-man roster: lefty Brad Wieck, second baseman Nick Madrigal, first baseman Alfonso Rivero, and outfielder Michael Hermosillo.
After the moves, the Cubs’ 40-man roster stands at 36, which is a perfectly fine spot to be right now. The Cubs need to leave some room to add prospects later this month (protecting from Rule 5 Draft), and also want to stay below 40 at all times so that they can be in position to make waiver claims. Absent that stuff, though, the Cubs will have the flexibility to make other additions to the 40-man as necessary by dropping guys currently on the 40-man on a one-in, one-out basis.
