Matt Szczur is one of those players who is as well known for the extra stuff as he is for his baseball playing, but in his case, that’s far from an insult. The guy was a great football player in college. He’s a ridiculously good artist. He has great taste in bats. He gave bone marrow to a stranger, saving her life and inspiring so many others to join the bone marrow registry (me included). There was just so much to root for.
And he did manage a solid baseball career, too, even if he never quite broke through as a regular in the big leagues. The 2010 Cubs 5th rounder worked his way up through the minors, debuting in the big leagues in 2014. Making it to The Show and hanging around for parts of five seasons is not nothing. Also: he was a World Series champion with the Chicago Cubs, and we’ll always remember him for that.
That is all to say, Matt Szczur is officially hanging ’em up. All the best to Szczur in what comes next, and his continued artistic pursuits:

Announcing my retirement from baseball the best way I know how…
Baseball is and always will be a part of me, but it's time to trade in my bat for a brush. I'm looking forward to being a husband, father, family member, and friend.
