You know what I love most about early Spring Training games?
PROSPECTS!
Today, one of the Cubs very best prospects – No. 3 according to Bleacher Nation’s rankings – Owen Caissie is drawing a start, batting ninth and playing right field. It’ll still be a while before we see Caissie in Chicago, but he’s right up there among all those potentially big-impact Cubs prospects you’ve been hearing about all winter. Once Brennen Davis gets promoted (hopefully some time this season), Caissie and Cristian Hernandez will be battling for top spot in the Cubs system.
With that said … the Cubs could’ve picked a better day to give Caissie a start. The Mariners have Robbie Ray on the mound, who’s not only just a really good big league pitcher, he’s also a fellow lefty, who was brutal on big league lefties last season (.254 wOBA). LOL. That’s a tough draw for the Cubs cookie, even if today’s start is just a general reward/for exposure.
Other than that, Kyle Hendricks is taking his second start of the spring, and he’s got a handful of potential starters in his lineup, from Rafael Ortega and Michael Hermosillo, to Nico Hoerner, and Clint Frazier. I’m still not clear on Alfonso Rivas’ role or odds to break camp with the team, but it’s a possibility and he’s in there today. Still no Seiya Suzuki, though.
I suspect that’s coming soon. Go Caissie. Go Cubs.
