Kyle Hendricks has had a rough go of it lately, allowing 14 earned runs over his past three starts (14.0 IP). He had two really nice outings back-to-back just before that (1 earned run in 14.0 IP), but in the two starts before that he again had that 9.00 ERA rocking with 10 ER in 10 IP.
Hendricks was reportedly dealing with some fatigue (maybe from that 116 pitch game?), though his issues go back over a year at this point.
Sean Manaea has made just one start this season that was shorter than 6.0 IP. He doesn’t always limit the damage like an ace (3.52 ERA, 90 average EV, plenty of fly balls) but you can absolutely count on him to pitch through it. He’s been very good this season and will present a significant challenge for the Cubs tonight.
