After all that, the Cubs and Mets DO get together on a trade, just not for the biggest names being discussed previously. And, of course, Mychal Givens – who was a must-trade – gets traded. Michael had the scoop, with the trade return to come.
Things get really hairy at this moment, with the bell about to sound, and then the deals that trickle in.
More soon.
UPDATE (Michael): The return is the big, right-handed reliever Saul González (6’7″, 230 lbs!).
González, 22, was selected by the Mets in the 23rd round of the 2018 MLB Draft. Since then, he’s made his way from rookie ball, through the complex league up to A-Ball this season, where he’s got a 2.81 ERA over 25.2 IP (one start, 13 relief appearances).
González has big strikeout numbers (he better, with that frame) — 27.6% this season — and good command (6.7 BB%). He is a reliever, but he’s an interesting piece for a non-closing, rental reliever like Givens.
