The Cubs acquired infielder Esteban Quiroz, 30, from the Rays for Harold Ramirez back in the spring. Quiroz spent the entire season at Triple-A Iowa, before being called up over the weekend in a series of roster moves that includes Frank Schwindel’s DFA. Quiroz has already debuted with a couple of pinch-hitting opportunities the past two nights, but he will be making the first start of his big league career this evening. And he’s even batting second!
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
- Zach McKinstry, SS
- Esteban Quiroz, 2B
- David Bote, 3B
- Ian Happ, LF
- Alfonso Rivas, 1B
- P.J. Higgins, C
- Jared Young, DH
- Nelson Velázquez, RF
- Michael Hermosillo, CF
SP: Adrian Sampson, RHP
With Quiroz at second base and Chris Morel on the bench, Zach McKinstry is taking over shortstop, riding his first legitimate hot streak as a Chicago Cub:
Maybe he just needed some time to adjust.
David Bote continues drawing a ton of starts (third base tonight) and he’s mirrored across the diamond by Alfonso Rivas. Meanwhile, P.J. Higgins is the man behind the plate and Jared Young is the designated hitter.
Once again, with all the injuries (Hoerner, Suzuki, Contreras, Ortega, Madrigal), this lineup is one to forget. But also: the Cubs are leading the Marlins by 1.5 games in the standings, so … maybe not the worst time for this sort of group either.
As usual, we’ll have your full Pre-Gamin’ post closer to game time (5:40 CT).
