I was responsible for a mess of kids this evening so my viewing of the game was pretty limited. The Cubs took advantage of some Pirates wildness in the 6th to put together another comeback win, their fourth win in a row (three of which they trailed in). Things got thorny in the 9th with Erich Uelmen loading the bases (single, walk, walk), but a strikeout to end it kept the Cubs’ winning streak alive.
I did see that Javier Assad was not at his best, and it’s those non-competitive pitches out of his hand that seem to be the problem when he gets wild. Too many pitches that just never have a chance of being anything other than a ball, putting himself behind in counts and/or generating walks. With a pitch mix as diverse as his (he threw six different pitches tonight), you would hope he has a few available to throw more consistently for strikes on any given night.
Offensively, Patrick Wisdom’s two-run homer was a big one, and the Cubs were stacking up a lot of hits. But one thing did stand out to me in the box score …
