In addition to everything else yesterday was, it was also the debut of the Chicago Cubs’ new $177 million shortstop. I don’t think Dansby Swanson is the type to feel the weight of that contract as added pressure, but debuting at home with your new team in front of a fan base that certainly recognizes your importance to whatever comes next – I mean, there’s some pressure there.
To his credit, Swanson simply played his game, working good at bats, knocking a few singles, and his one out was actually a 109 mph barreled lineout. Swanson’s first hit drove in the Cubs’ first run of the season:
He also showed up on defense, as you would expect him to, making a nice sliding play at one point, and helping turn a key early double play.
