I Can Still Cheer for Willson Contreras When He Beefs with Madison Bumgarner (UPDATE: Diamondbacks Boot Bumgarner)

Chicago Cubs

When two gas giants collide in the galaxy, it can be very hard to predict exactly what’s going to happen. Apparently, they can sometimes merge into an even bigger gas giant, but sometimes they wind up obliterating each other.

Yesterday, Madison Bumgarner and Willson Contreras got into a heated argument. It did not come to blows, but you had Bumgarner dropping some extremely naughty words, and you had Contreras responding in kind, while also dramatically bat flipping a walk:

It’s hard to tell for certain, but it seemed like Bumgarner – a noted redass – took exception to Contreras being upset that he swung on and fouled that up and in fastball. Contreras responded, and then when he took the next pitch for a ball, did what I think most of us would do in that situation, flipping the hell out of the bat.

Not that you were going to get a great explanation from Bumgarner on why he started shouting curse words and calling names:

Of course, we know all too well that Willson Contreras can get under the skin of the opposing team (and opposing fan bases, it turns out!), and he says that’s all he was trying to do:

Contreras’s approach seemingly worked, by the way, because Bumgarner lost it so badly after that moment that he was charged with another four runs that inning, which was his final of the day.

All things considered, even after the fractious break up of Contreras and Cubs fans, this is one of those situations where I can still root for Contreras. Bumgarner seemed to be a bit ridiculous in that moment, as he often is, and Contreras “won.” Good for him.

UPDATE: Incredible. This was the last thing Bumgarner did with the Diamondbacks:
