The hopes for a winning road trip are just about dashed.
Jameson Taillon had the kind of start that would’ve been a lot easier to talk up if not for the rest of his season. Mostly, he was solid through five innings of work, allowing just a couple solo home runs (one of which was to Mike Trout, which barely counts). When he allowed a couple baserunners early in the 6th, he was pulled for Mark Leiter Jr. Unfortunately it was an off night for Leiter, who not only allowed both of those baserunners to score, but also a couple of his own. Taillon’s line was blown up, and the Cubs lost.
Not that it was just about that 6th inning of pitching, because the bats were silent outside of a trio of hits (that if they hadn’t all come in a row in the 5th inning, maybe the Cubs don’t score at all).
