Chicago Cubs outfielder – I suppose I don’t get to say “prospect” anymore, as he’s graduated off of most lists – Pete Crow-Armstrong was sent back to Triple-A Iowa this week, primarily so that he could resume getting regular starts and continue his offensive development.
Naturally, PCA homered in his first game back with Iowa on Tuesday, had two singles and two walks on Wednesday, and he’d already doubled in Thursday night’s game before he added his second homer of the week, a 404-foot blast.
As Iowa Cubs voice Alex Cohen notes, that’s three straight multi-hit nights for PCA since returning to Iowa.
Meanwhile, PCA’s outfield-mate Alexander Canario had himself a game last night, homering twice, the second of which went 445 feet:
Canario is now hitting .286/.375/.571/139 wRC+ at Iowa, with his strikeout rate (25.9%) down a tick from last year (28.0%). That’s really going to be the separator for him between having a really nice long big league career as a starter, and not quite getting to that level. He has incredible power, he’s a great athlete, and he takes his walks. But Canario just has a bit too much swing-and-miss to consistently succeed against big league pitching. He only just turned 24, so there’s still time to continue developing, especially as there isn’t a spot for him to start right now on the big league team anyway.
(The other two Iowa Cubs outfielders of note, Brennen Davis and Owen Caissie, did not play last night. We know Davis left the previous game early for precautionary reasons, and Caissie has now sat two games in a row for unknown reasons.)
