Another pitcher on the mend, and getting closer to a return to the big league team.
Jordan Wicks has been out since April 23 with a forearm strain, and the Cubs have quite wisely been careful bringing back one of their important young pitchers. The season is long and a career is longer, so don’t mess around with forearm/elbow/shoulder injuries.
Thankfully, Wicks has recovered well along the way, and he’s reached the rehab start stage. As in tonight, at Iowa:
As is always the case with rehab outings, good results are swell, but they aren’t really what you’re focused on. You just want to see a guy get a certain amount of work in, feel good along the way, and then feel good the next day. It’ll be interesting to see how stretched out Jordan Wicks is right now, but I wouldn’t expect more than the three-inning/45-pitch range. This is likely just the first of multiple rehab outings.
Wicks, 24, opened the season to some mediocre results, but it was clear watching him that he was pitching much, much better than those results. I am very eager to see him back in the rotation (and how he fits can be decided at that time – if Kyle Hendricks isn’t moved back from the bullpen, then the spot for Wicks is easy enough).
