That’s right. ANOTHER one. Thus, I have to start with the same intro:
The Chicago Cubs are seriously going off on the minor league pitching signings here after the start of the season. Sure, you sometimes see one, but this is entirely different (and I suspect it’s because of the new stateside org roster limits, so the Cubs are smartly filling in new guys when they get a roster chance (as other guys get hurt)).
So, in the last couple weeks, the Cubs have signed big leaguer depth types Julio Teheran and Dan Straily, international pitcher Daniel Missaki, pitching prospect types Nico Zeglin and Mitchell Tyranski, and now they’ve also signed Triple-A/MLB border guy Jake Wong. (UPDATE: And also Carlo Reyes and Aaron Perry!) (UPDATE: And also Kyle McGowin!) (UPDATE: And also Dalton Moats!)
So, taking that group of TEN in-season minor league pitcher signings and making it ELEVEN:
As you can see, Trey Supak was actually signed a week ago, and even debuted earlier this week. But that’s how many of these signings there have been – sometimes I miss them for a few days!
Supak, 27, was originally drafted in 2014 out of high school at number 73 overall by the Pirates. He spent the bulk of his development years in the Brewers organization, must’ve suffered an injury at some point in 2020/21, and wound up pitching in the A’s organization in 2022 and 2023. Supak then opened 2024 putting up hilarious numbers in the Atlantic League, so the Cubs came calling to give him another affiliated chance.
