This year’s edition, however, breaks the mold by featuring a first-ever PGA vs. LPGA matchup for a charitable cause.

A History of The Match: From Tiger vs. Phil to Charity Showdowns
Since its debut in 2020, The Match has become a staple in the golfing world, captivating audiences with its unique format, celebrity pairings, and charitable focus. Here’s a look back at the first eight installments that paved the way for today’s historic PGA vs. LPGA clash:
2018: Tiger Woods vs. Phil Mickelson – The inaugural event featured golf legends Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson in a head-to-head battle at Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas with the winner taking home the $9 million prize. Mickelson ended up victorious after four playoff holes pushed the match to 22 total holes.
2020: Tiger Woods & Peyton Manning vs. Phil Mickelson & Tom Brady – This edition, named “Capital One’s The Match: Champions for Charity” saw the iconic rivalry between Woods and Mickelson reignited, but with the twist of each player being paired with a legendary NFL quarterback. Held at Medalist Golf Club in Florida, Woods and Manning won by a single hole.

2020: Phil Mickelson & Charles Barkley vs. Stephen Curry & Peyton Manning – “The Match: Champions for Change” broke new ground by featuring athletes from different sports, highlighting the event’s broader appeal beyond just golf fans. It was held at Stone Canyon Golf Club in Arizona with the proceeds going towards HBCUs.
2021: Phil Mickelson & Tom Brady vs. Bryson DeChambeau & Aaron Rodgers – The Match IV once again featured a couple of NFL quarterbacks and was held at The Reserve at Moonlight Basin in Montana. Bryson and A-Rodg won the match 3&2.
2021: Bryson vs Brooks – Held at the Wynn Golf Club in Las Vegas, this one played off the supposed rivalry brewing between the two golfers, and like the original Match was featured just the two golfers. This was just a 12 hole match and was won by Koepka.
2022: All Quarterback Edition – The sixth iteration was composed completely of NFL quarterbacks. Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers narrowly defeated their opponents, Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes.
2022: Rory & Tiger vs Justin & Jordan – seeing some of the previous participants joining LIV, this edition was back to all PGA golfers again, but with some new faces. Spieth and Thomas ended up victorious at Pelican Golf Club in Florida, winning 3&2.
2023: NFL vs NBA – Going back to the format that featured only non-PGA athletes, teammates Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce beat NBA stars Steph Curry and Klay Thompson.
Each installment of The Match has added its own unique chapter to the event’s history, evolving the format, attracting new audiences, and constantly raising the bar for future editions. Today’s PGA vs. LPGA matchup promises to be another groundbreaking moment, solidifying The Match’s position as a platform for innovative competition, charitable giving, and expanding the reach of the sport.
