Former NFL player Sergio Brown is in custody in connection with his mother’s death last month in west suburban Maywood, Illinois.
According to CNN, Brown, who had been to Mexico, was deported on Tuesday and arrested by US law enforcement near San Diego based on an arrest warrant issued in Illinois. The police in San Diego are currently working on moving Brown from Southern California to the Chicago area.
Since last month, police were searching for Brown in connection to the death of his mother, which has been ruled a homicide by the department and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. The body of his mother, Myrtle Brown, was found in Addison Creek near her home in Maywood on on September 16. Brown, 35, played football at Proviso East High School in Maywood and at Notre Dame.
He later signed with the New England Patriots as an undrafted free agent in 2010. Brown played safety in the NFL for six seasons, making stops in New England, Indianapolis, Atlanta, Jacksonville, and Buffalo before retiring in 2016.
Last month, Brown has since surfaced on social media, posting a pair of concerning and weird videos on Instagram. Brown claims to be in Mexico and has no involvement in the death of his mother, Myrtle.
In the videos, Brown blames the Maywood police department and the FBI for his mother’s death and claims that the law enforcement agencies had recently “kidnapped” him from his Maywood home.
The Maywood police department issued a statement this week saying that “Maywood Police Department detectives are aware of a video that has surfaced on social media in relation to Mr. Sergio Brown, who is still considered a missing person and are also looking [into] it’s authenticity.”
According to the CNN report, “Mexican law enforcement officers have known Brown’s whereabouts since at least September 19, the source said, and deported him after authorities in Illinois finally obtained an arrest warrant pertaining to the death of Brown’s mother.”
Last week, the family of Myrtle Brown issued a statement through their attorney, Christian Conway. They are urging authorities to expedite the investigation into her death as they believe there is enough evidence to make an arrest.
“We implore law enforcement agencies, particularly the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, to work diligently and thoroughly in pursuit of truth and accountability for Myrtle Jean Simmons-Brown. No family should bear the weight of uncertainty regarding the circumstances of their loved one’s passing,” the family said.
The family said last week they haven’t had contact with Sergio Brown, but were hopeful that he would be located and safely returned to the United States.
“We continue to pray for his well-being and advocate for his immediate and safe return to the United States. Let us work together to turn this tragic loss into a force for positive change and justice,” the statement read.
“Myrtle was a beautiful, loving, and inspirational soul that made everyone around her feel like they mattered. With her contagious smile and personality, our loss of Myrtle has left an indescribable void not only in our lives, but in our communities,” the family said.
