NFL Notes: Justin Jefferson Won’t Play on MNF, Shaq Leonard to Visit Cowboys, More

The Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears will close the Week 12 schedule tonight on Monday Night Football, but the Vikings will again be without star wide receiver Justin Jefferson. Plus, the Dallas Cowboys will get a look at Shaq Leonard this week.

  • “We know that having Justin Jefferson out there gives us the best chance to win but the big picture with this player – he means the absolute world to me and this organization – we’re going to do what’s best for him,” Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell said this weekend. Apparently what’s best for Jefferson is another week of rest.
  • Minnesota takes on the Bears tonight on Monday Night Football, and they will not have Jefferson who has missed six weeks with a hamstring injury. Tonight will mark seven weeks despite the fact that Jefferson has been practicing with the team since November 8.
  • Jefferson said (via PFT) that his extended absence has nothing to do with his ongoing contract extension discussions with the Vikings. “I don’t really care too much, just because everyone is going to have their own opinions of what they think I’m thinking or what I’m doing,” Jefferson said. “So it is what it is. I know my position. I know what I’m doing. And I know it’s not for the contract. It’s not for the contract at all.”

  • Shaquille Leonard — a three-time All-Pro linebacker — was surprisingly waived by the Indianapolis Colts last week. However, all may go well for him as he is scheduled to visit the Cowboys on Tuesday, as reported by NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero.
  • The Cowboys are looking for help at linebacker after the loss of Leighton Vander Esch. If the Cowboys like what they see, they could have a solution at a bargain price. After clearing waivers last week, Leonard is a free agent and free to sign with anyone. The Colts are on the hook for his contract that he signed with them.
  • Leonard began his career on a Hall of Fame trajectory in 2018 when he was voted AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year and garnered the first of his three first-team All-Pro accolades. However, in 2022, he was ravaged by injuries, including a back surgery, concussion, and broken nose. He only played in three games that year. Even though he started nine games for the Colts this season, his performance waned, and he grew frustrated with his usage under a new staff.

  • Browns QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson is dealing with a concussion. left Sunday’s 29-12 loss to the Broncos with a concussion after taking a hard hit at the end of a pass play. Thompson-Robinson exited the game after he was hit while throwing an incompletion and went to the ground hard. Denver linebacker Baron Browning was called for a roughing the passer penalty. The television broadcast showed DTR with a bloody mouth as he made his way to the medical tent on the sideline.
  • The Baltimore Ravens topped the Los Angeles Chargers last night on Sunday Night Football. Zay Flowers’ two touchdowns supplemented a terrific performance by the Ravens defense at SoFi Stadium. Flowers’ second touchdown came late in the fourth quarter with the Ravens leading by a field goal and sealed the deal for Baltimore.
  • The Ravens moved to 9-3 with the victory over the Chargers and head into their bye week with the AFC’s best record after 12 weeks of action.
  • The Eagles rain-soaked overtime victory over the Bills and the Jaguars narrow victory over the Texans in Houston were the highlights of a wonderful Sunday of action across the league. You can read all about Sunday in this week’s Sunday 7:
  • ICYMI: The Carolina Panthers fired head coach Frank Reich this morning. Reich lasted just 11 games with the Panthers, who are 1-10 after losing to the Titans on Sunday. Panthers owner David Tepper said that special teams coordinator Chris Tabor will serve as the team’s interim head coach, and offensive coordinator Thomas Brown will resume play-calling duties with senior advisor Jim Caldwell serving as his special assistant.
